Joe Thuney is a graduate student on the NC State football team. Since 2013, Thuney has worked with a special needs clinic, the Wolfpack women’s clinic, helped organize “Lift for Life” event for Uplifting Athletes and participated in the “Wolfpack Blitz” (student-athletes read at schools across Wake County during a one-week period) multiple times. He has also made various appearances at several elementary schools. Thuney befriended a young boy who has a rare disease that causes almost constant, excruciating pain at the Duke Children’s Hospital’s Dance-a-thon. Thuney communicates with the young boy and his family and has had them as his special guest at a Wolfpack spring football practice.

Thuney has been elected by his teammates to the team’s Leadership Council for the past three seasons. He has earned the team’s “Jim Ritcher Award” for most valuable offensive lineman. Thuney scored an unheard of 39 on the Wonderlic test according to an NFL scout. A voracious reader, Thuney is carrying a 3.274 grade point average, and pursuing a master’s degree in Accounting and Spanish.

Karlie Mueller is a senior on the Texas A&M Women’s Soccer team. Mueller is the co-founder and president of “Love Your Melon,” an initiative she campaigned for, organized, and gained approval as a new student organization at Texas A&M. “Love Your Melon” raises funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. Her initial fundraising efforts culminated in Mueller delivering over 100 “Love Your Melon” beanies to children and their families at a Ronald McDonald House event in Houston, Texas. Mueller also helped fundraise for pediatric cancer research through participating in Texas A&M’s “Go Gold” Women’s Soccer game. She scored the winning goal in the “Go Gold” game. Mueller also donates time interacting with children at the Texas Children’s Hospital, delivering exercise and nutrition education to elementary students, assisting local elementary school teachers with daily classroom tasks, and several youth clinics introducing soccer to youth in the community.

Mueller is a captain on her soccer team. She is carrying a 3.411 grade point average and majoring in Allied Health.
