Juan Pablo (J.P.) Capote, son of two Cuban-born parents, was born and raised in Miami, Florida.

He was exposed to both sports and social justice at an early age when his father coached him in baseball, and when he would accompany him as a child to various Cuban political rallies. His father was a political prisoner in Cuba and served as the Vice President for the Cuban Patriotic Board in Miami when he arrived to the United States. His mother, now an Assistant Principal for Miami-Dade Public Schools, taught him the importance of education and personal development.

With his childhood influences, J.P. played high school football at Coral Gables Senior High and then went on to play four years of college football at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Business Administration.

While at West Virginia Wesleyan College, J.P. got his first introduction into student affairs as an undergrad when he worked as a Resident Assistant. In grad school, he continued his student affairs journey by becoming a Graduate Hall Director/Outdoor Recreation Coordinator. These experiences exposed J.P.’s passion for fostering teamwork and leadership amongst college students.

Between his two years of grad school, J.P. obtained an ACUHO-I Internship at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. There, he worked in their Housing and Residence Life Department on creating their professional and student staff training experiences. Those experiences carried J.P. to the University of Central Florida in the summer of 2012 where he worked as an Area Coordinator for the Department of Housing and Residence Life. During this time, J.P. became known for his presentations on teamwork, leadership, collaboration and social justice. He was selected to present nationally at the 2016 NAA Student Housing Conference and Exposition on cultivating partnerships between the private student housing sector and the universities.

J.P., now an Assistant Director for the NCAS, is looking forward to combining all his passion areas and using his new platform to make positive influences on society and those he serves.
